The US Network for Democracy in Brazil stands in solidarity with the Favela do Jacarezinho community in Rio de Janeiro. We condemn the unjustified and egregious act of violence of this police operation that massacred 25 people in the Jacarezinho community. Like many low-income neighborhoods in Brazil, it is a predominantly Afro-Brazilian community. These communities are often characterized as dangerous and criminal. However, they are dynamic communities made of elders who hold important knowledge for community members and young people who hold hope for these communities and the world. They are also made of everyday citizens who are the heartbeat of communities. No one deserves to be executed at the hands of the state. We will continue to stand against these executions and support our sisters, brothers, and others in Brazil.
